AARP Florida Earns Silver Award as Bicycle-Friendly Business

Posted on 07/09/20

AARP Florida has earned recognition as a Silver Award Bicycle Friendly Business from the League of American Bicyclists.

We’ve joined the movement of 1,416 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies across the United States in transforming Florida communities to be more welcoming to older adults and everyone who cycles. We know so many more of you are biking during the pandemic, and we are proud to support the health and well-being of our streets and sidewalks by being more welcoming to people choosing to bike.

“Since AARP Florida applied for the Bicycle Friendly Business award in February 2020, much has changed across the country,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “What hasn’t changed is the commitment of our Bicycle Friendly Business award winners to the health and well-being of their employees, customers, and community through the promotion and encouragement of bicycling as a means of transportation, fun, and fitness.”

Bike Friendly

AARP Florida joins 75 other new and renewing BFBs in the League’s Spring 2020 round of BFB awards, which includes government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, bike shops, and others across industries, all united in a commitment to transform American workplaces to be more welcoming to customers and employees who bike. The Bicycle Friendly Business award recognizes an organization’s contributions over months and years to the movement to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.

AARP Florida regularly partners with and local, state and national organizations as part of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. The initiative that launched in 2012 operates under the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program that combines forces with cities and communities to prepare for the rapid aging of the U.S. population and the factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. In the Sunshine State, AARP Florida has 32 Age Friendly Communities that are working on enhancing their community’s livability.

“We’re always looking at things from every angle to support active lifestyles and enhanced social opportunities as part of our ongoing efforts to improve community livability,” said Jeff Johnson, AARP Florida state director. “Now more than ever, we seek accessible approaches for people of all ages to be social and active - bicycling is a premiere way to safely do both while still abiding by the need to physically distance during a pandemic.”
