AARP El Paso volunteers and new director are on the move!

Posted on 07/01/24

It hasn’t been long since Liliana Mireles joined AARP Texas as its El Paso Associate State Director for Outreach and Local Advocacy, but you can already see the impact she’s having. In May, El Paso joined AARP offices around Texas for a statewide document shredding event on one hot Saturday morning. Within a few short hours, more than 3,100 pounds of documents were shredded as a community service for the El Paso residents. The volunteer team has also grown, and they’re excited to have Liliana lead their work.

For her part, Liliana is also excited and grateful to have such a staunch group of hardworking volunteers. Liliana says, “I’m so happy to have a strong team that is passionate about their community and who want to take it to the next level.” The group was in place and on the move even before she assumed her new role. Without a local AARP staff presence, the El Paso volunteer team had been actively working in the local community—some for as long as 14 years!

Since joining AARP, Liliana has held volunteer recruitment luncheons. Current volunteers, potential new volunteers, and community partner organizations attend the luncheons. This event has proven successful, as AARP El Paso has been increasing its volunteer team. AARP’s support has been key to the growth. Liliana says, “Having a staff presence in El Paso and having resources available locally has energized the community.”

Liliana highlights her goal of getting more volunteers involved, “We’re always looking for people willing and able to serve their community. You don’t have to be 50-plus to volunteer. You can be 20 years old or 90 years old; anyone who is willing and invested in the community that AARP serves, and just El Paso in general, is welcome.”

AARP Texas has a history in El Paso. Prior to Liliana’s arrival, the AARP San Antonio office teamed up with the Chihuahuas Baseball team for several seasons to offer a ticket discount to home games. This special discount for AARP members and their guests continues this summer. The Chihuahuas sponsorship reinforces AARP’s local presence in El Paso, and Liliana and the volunteers attend home games to provide information to baseball fans on issues, like fraud and Social Security.

AARP has also provided sponsorships and participated in the Aging to Perfection expos, and has been active in advocating for the adoption of a Complete Streets policy by the city. Adopted in 2022, a Complete Streets design enables safe access for all people who use streets, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
