CHARLOTTE — Did you know that one-out-of every ten older adults in the US experience elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year?

Join Mecklenburg County, AARP, and the US Attorney General’s Office as we wear purple to raise awareness and walk against abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older persons on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024. This community wide walk is free and open to the public in an effort to fill Freedom Park with purple as a sign of our commitment to protect older adults in Mecklenburg County. #WalkforWEAAD

In an effort to address elder mistreatment worldwide, the World Health Organization and International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th, 2006. In partnership with the United Nations (UN), this international acknowledgement aims to unite communities in raising awareness about elder abuse in many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and neglect.
