3 authentic ways to celebrate Texas Independence Day

Posted on 02/01/18

The favorite holiday of our proud state falls on Friday, March 2. While a weekend trip to the San Antonio Southside Missions is a popular way to commemorate our state’s independence, as a Texan, you’re probably not too keen on following the herd.

Here are three rebellious ways that you can embrace your Texan identity and keep community close to your heart.

  1. Explore the Multicultural Lone Star State

Houston was listed in 2017 as the most culturally diverse city in the US, outranking cultural epicenters like Brooklyn and San Francisco. Take time to learn about multicultural Texas with a trip to a heritage-focused museum near you. Some options include San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures, Austin’s Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, and in Houston’s museum district, The Houston Museum of African American Culture, Asia Society Texas Center, and the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum.

  1. Strive for a Livable Community

AARP defines a “livable community” as one that is safe and secure, has affordable and appropriate housing and transportation options, and supportive community features and services. Ask your fellow Texans what needs your community might have. An area in your city might be eligible to apply for a grant from AARP used to improve quality of life for all ages. Subscribe to the AARP Livable Communities e-Newsletter for the opportunity to apply beginning March 21.

  1. Stake your Claim in Public Policy

Texans are far from a wishy-washy bunch. We care about our families, our communities, and especially the policies that shape day-to-day life. If you haven’t already, visit VoteTexas to find your polling place before the first statewide primaries of 2018, which will take place on Tuesday, March 6.
