June 23 and 24, AARP in St. Louis participated in PrideFest, held at Soldiers Memorial Park. St. Louis PrideFest is one of the largest celebrations of the LGBTQ community in the Midwest region with over 300,000 visitors and 160 various booths for all to enjoy. Attendees who stopped by the AARP booth were able to learn about fraud protection and participate in the Fraud Fighter Bowl-a-Rama, while raising money for a good cause! For every pin that a bowler knocked down, $1 dollar was donated to Legal Services of Eastern Missouri to help people who have been affected by fraud scams. AARP in St. Louis raised a total of $5000 over the weekend to be donated to the organization.
AARP members who presented their AARP membership card received a very cool AARP in St. Louis Pride umbrella. Over 120 AARP members walked away with their commemorative umbrella!
Sunday, June 24, AARP in STL participated in the PrideFest parade. The AARP float was a trolley decorated with pride! AARP members as well as family and friends rode on or walked alongside the trolley during the parade and distributed rainbow koozies to parade viewers along the way.
Also, during the two day event, AARP volunteers collected 398 signatures as part of the “Be the Difference Voter Pledge”. The purpose of signing the voter pledge is to reinforce the importance of voting and having people commit to voting in the upcoming 2018 mid-term elections.
Overall, AARP in St. Louis was able to engage with over 1000 PrideFest attendees. The goal of PrideFest is to help develop a better understanding of and equality for the LGBTQ community through interactive events and programs designed to raise awareness with the general population.
