The World Without You

The World Without You is a story about the Frankel family who come together in 2005, a year after the death of the youngest son Leo, a journalist, at the hands of Al Qaeda to memorialize him at their summer cabin in the Berkshires. In so doing, they discover that the man they are burying is not quite the golden brother and son they thought, nor are they, as a family, the singular force for all that is helpless and downtrodden in the world that they were raised to be. Stuck in this country house together for the first time in years, each of Leo’s survivors must admit untruths they’ve been holding onto about not only him, but themselves, and finally obliterate the old family mechanism, to have any chance at surviving as “The Frankels,” in the future.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Joshua Henkin, The World Without You deals with a grieving family that gathers on the Fourth of July weekend to honor the memory of their journalist son, Leo Frankel, who was killed in Iraq the previous year. They are confronted with old hurts as well as many dark secrets that threaten to tear the fragile threads barely holding the family together. Leo's mother, Marilyn, entrenched in grief, drops a bombshell when she announces she's leaving her husband, David, who has moved on from his mourning and still holds a grudge against Leo for his decision to go to Iraq and leave his wife and toddler behind. Marilyn's desire to find what actually happened to Leo has become an obsession with her risking everything to find the truth. Meanwhile, Leo's widow, Thisbe, hasn't come to terms with how falling in love with a new man will change her dynamic with the family, and she struggles with how best to let them know without causing further despair.

One and Only Jewish Miss America

“The One and Only Jewish Miss America” is the surprising story of Bess Myerson, the talented beauty queen from the Bronx, and how she won the world’s most famous beauty pageant 75 years ago, at the tail end of World War II. The film follows Bess, the middle daughter of poor Russian immigrants, from her childhood in a one-bedroom Jewish housing project apartment through the suspense-filled pageant. Impressed by the college-educated musician, the judges chose her in spite of anonymous threatening phone calls and sponsor disapproval of a Jewish pageant winner. On her 1945 Miss America tour, Bess faced antisemitism and closed doors at race-restricted venues which did not allow Jews. It is also a story of courage as her disappointment turned to determination, leading Bess Myerson to start her own tour to teach tolerance at high schools and colleges around the country -- a tour which launched her lifelong passion for justice.
