The LDS Hospital Total Joint Replacement class for Knee and Hip Replacement patients is conducted every Thursday from 4-5 p.m. on W7, the Joint Center. All patients scheduled for joint replacement surgery, as well the "health coach" who will help the patient at home following surgery, are encouraged to attend. Here's the agenda:
Knee patients and hip patients separate for the first 15 minutes.
-Knee patients start working with an occupational therapist. They review bathroom transfers and safety, lower body dressings, and any other activities of daily living that you may be concerned about.
-Hip patients start with a physical therapist. They go over the process of walking after the surgery, using stairs, comparing walkers versus crutches, and answer any questions.
Then the two groups switch.
For the last 30 minutes the two groups will combine and meet with the nurse educator. The educator will explain what to expect when you come to the hospital, what is involved in the surgery, possible complications, the roles of everyone involved, support, pain control, safety, and more. There will be plenty of time for questions.
Studies have found that patients who attend a pre-operative class prior to surgery recovery faster and have better outcomes than those who don't.
Location: LDS Hospital Joint Replacement Center - West 7
