About the Event
RED EYE 50/50
What better way to start the New Year off than to start it at the 1/2 mile, high banked asphalt oval of New Smyrna Speedway for the historic annual RED EYE race!
Almost 40 years ago in 1984 Clyde Hart started the RED EYE 100 as a way to ring in the New Year! New Smyrna Speedway was the only track that raced 52 weeks a year so this was a way to get the race season started!
The RED EYE started as a 100 lap race for the Late Models with the supporting divisions racing too. It was historically run the first Saturday night of the New Year so it may have actually fallen on New Year’s Day hence the name “RED EYE”! Back in “the day” they may have been hung over from the New Year’s Eve festivities but they still came to race, back in those days it was a different breed of racecar drivers and fans.
Things are done a little differently now. For 34 years It was a 100 lap race for the Late Models which became the Super Late Models, from 1984 to 2018 the (Super) Late Models were the main event. In those 34 years of good racing and good times only 3 races were cancelled, 1989, 2007 & 2008, the reasons are unknown. In 2019 the race was updated and many changes were made the most significant change was taking it from a 100 lap race for the Super Late Models to 2-50 lap races for the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models. The RED EYE 100 became the RED EYE 50/50. The Super Late Models and Pro Late Models are the main event of the night but it’s a full night of racing with all the regular race divisions racing!
