The Landfill Fashionista, a multimedia art exhibition from the Staten Island Urban Center’s Young Women’s Leadership Group, highlights the need for environmental justice against the backdrop of community hope for Staten Island’s North Shore.

The Staten Island Urban Center’s Young Women’s Leadership Group culminates its 2020 season with an examination of image, environment, and culture through the lens of young girls of color. The Landfill Fashionista uses photography, videography, performance, and visual art to lift ideas to combat environmental justice in attempts to change the narrative on what may have once been viewed as garbage, ugly or contaminated transformed into what is now alive, beautiful and hope filled.

The Staten Island Urban Center strengthens the urban environment of Staten Island neighborhoods by way of youth & community development through youth & community involvement. Our mission is to inspire and educate multi-generational and multi-ethnic stakeholders as they build their own healthy neighborhoods and help to elevate their voices through community activism, social justice arts, publications and youth development.

As you enjoy public art at Snug Harbor, please remember:

- Maintain a distance of 6+ feet away from other visitors whenever possible

- Wear a mask while on campus

- Practice good hygiene and sanitization

- Stay home if you are sick

This exhibition is supported in part by: NYC Council’s Young Women’s Leadership Initiative, NYC Dept of Youth and Community Development, Staten Island Arts, Pinkerton Foundation, Staten Island Foundation, Beacon Giving Group, D’Addario Foundation and Citizens Committee of NYC and with partnership support of Councilmember Debi Rose, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and Maker Park Radio.
