Join us for our third production of Theatre Jacksonville’s 101st Season as we present The Belle of Amherst.

Don’t miss Theatre Jacksonville’s virtual production of The Belle of Amherst, by William Luce presented On Demand April 15th -19th, 2021.  In the parlor of her Amherst, MA home, the reclusive nineteenth-century poet Emily Dickinson recollects her past through her work, her diaries and letters, and a few encounters with significant people in her life.  Luce’s classic play reveals both the pain and joy of Dickinson’s secluded life and celebrates her enormous talent that was not truly recognized or appreciated until well after her death.

Sinda Nichols shines as Emily in this one-woman tour de force performance recorded live on the mainstage at Theatre Jacksonville.  And through the magic of online technology, ticketholders will be able to enjoy the show from the comfort of their own home at any time during the run.

The Belle of Amherst premiered on Broadway in 1976 starring Julie Harris in her Tony Award winning performance.  The play garnered glowing reviews and has become an oft-produced piece on stages far and wide ever since.  Its success may be best described by the author himself in his note to the script:

The Belle of Amherst is a love affair with language, a celebration of all that is beautiful and poignant in life.  As it turns out, shy Miss Emily was writing for theater as surely as she breathed.  In her every evocative phrase there is theatrical texture.  On stage, the strange ways of Emily Dickinson become dramatic qualities in an arena large enough to give them the look of “divinest Sense.”  Thus, the theater seems a thoroughly appropriate setting for Emily’s life and art, enabling actress and audience to “climb the Bars of Ecstasy” together.
