Did you know The Beatles partied in Edgewater?
For many in the 1960s, The Beatles revolutionized the staid American cultural scene. For others, the mop-top haircuts, jangling music, and hysterical female fans that always greeted the lads from Liverpool, were a symbol of unwelcome social and cultural decay. Public conflict over the group increased as the decade wore on, especially after The Beatles embraced more extreme countercultural values.
And Chicago was at the center of some of The Beatles more interesting episodes – from a party at Edgewater’s Saddle and Cycle Club to John Lennon’s most famous mea culpa. These fascinating stories are explored in the new book “Joy and Fear: The Beatles, Chicago and the 1960s” by local historian John Lyons. Join Professor Lyons for a provocative look back at those turbulent times and how they were shaped by the Fab Four and the Windy City.
