Sundance Film Festival is bringing the 2021 Festival to audiences in select cities across the country through Sundance Satellite Screens-and the Tropic is thrilled to be hosting a Sundance Satellite on our island!

The seven-day Festival, held January 28 through February 3, will feature both digital and in-person screenings, using a custom-designed online platform as well as drive-ins, independent art-houses, and a network of local community partnerships in select cities. These partnerships allow the Festival to expand beyond its Utah home and bring feature films and customized local programming-talks, events, artist meet-ups-to communities across the country.

This includes Key West, where the Tropic will be creating and hosting Satellite Screen events centered on selections from the 2021 Sundance Film Festival program-meaning you will be among the first in the world to see the exciting lineup of Sundance films as they make their World Premiere! We’ll be hosting screenings inside the Tropic, as well as outdoors at a variety of venues around the island.

Schedule:
Opening Night: Strawberry Mansion
Our opening night feature, Strawberry Mansion, is set in the not-too-distant future, where an all-seeing surveillance state conducts “dream audits” to collect taxes on the unconscious lives of the populace. Mild-mannered government agent James Preble (Kentucker Audley) travels to a remote farmhouse to audit the dreams of Arabella “Bella” Isadora (Penny Fuller), an eccentric, aging artist. Entering Bella’s vast VHS archive, which contains a lifetime of dreams, Preble stumbles upon a secret that offers him a chance at love—and hope for escape.

Directors Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney’s playfully surreal romantic fantasy envisions a world not so different from our own: a glitchy digital dystopia where every human experience is monetized—where even our unconscious minds have been colonized by advertising. With its wildly expressive color schemes and inventive dreamscapes, Strawberry Mansion also conjures an optimistic future through a retreat to our analog past. Audley and Fuller are disarmingly funny as the intergenerational (and interdimensional) lovers, while Grace Glowicki is affecting as the young Bella of Preble’s dreams. Electronic musician Dan Deacon scores this strange vision with shimmering synths and hypnotic strings.
