For over 35 years the Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Festival has attracted accomplished visual and performing artists to the greater Fairfax community.

Now, more than ever, we understand the importance of the arts in our lives. The arts do not just create community but they have the power to heal. That is why the theme for the 2021 Spotlight on the Arts Festival is Art Heals.

The 2021 Festival will look a little different than it has in the past. The festival will have both virtual and in person events, taking into account all of the latest COVID-19 guidelines from the CDC and Virginia Department of Health.

The Fairfax community will still enjoy performances from George Mason University, City of Fairfax Theatre Company, Shoestring Theatre Company, art from your neighbors plus so much more. Even in challenging times, Spotlight on the Arts will continue to put the “spotlight” on existing and emerging arts-oriented organizations and activities in the central Fairfax area!

Schedule:

Spotlight on the Arts Neighborhood Art Celebration

City of Fairfax residents are invited to turn their front yard and neighborhood in to a drive-by art gallery. Spotlight’s Theme for 2021 is “Art Heals.” Part of healing is building community. What better way to create community than to have neighborhood art displays?

From April 23 – May 9 residents of Fairfax will be invited to create art displays in their front yard. The displays can be made of whatever you like. Create a sculpture out of your recycling for the week, turn your driveway into a work of art with sidewalk chalk, or buy some plywood and paint a mural! The options are endless.

Since we do not want the price of buying art supplies to be a hindrance, Spotlight on the Arts will provide art kits to those who need them. Each kit will contain, a 2×4’ piece of plywood, a can of Chalkboard paint, and rainbow chalk to create your own chalk board that you can keep! Sign up to receive your kit by emailing Megan at Megan.DuBois@fairfaxva.gov. If your art work is sensitive to the weather, the Drive by Day for the Neighborhood Art Celebration will be May 1 (Rain date May 2).

7:00pm: Family Play

A double feature of original short films, “Time Heist” and “The Crew,” created by AFYP Artistic Associate Rebecca Wahls in collaboration with three local Fairfax families.

Location: Virtual
