2nd Annual Sonatina-Sonata Festival

Piano Scholarships to attend Northwest Missouri State University after high school graduation

To encourage piano students to study sonatas, both solo and collaborative sonatas. To provide students the experience of performing on a University campus and hear other students play similar repertoire. To provide students feedback, reflections, and advice on their playing from University faculty. To encourage continued study and participation over multiple years, students will receive a certificate of participation.

Tentative Schedule
    
3-3:30 p.m. - Welcome and Masterclass
3:30-3:50 p.m. - Practice Time
4-5:15 p.m. - Honors Recital
5:15-5:30 p.m. - Awards

Entry Fee: $45 per student (non-refundable)

Eligibility: Students in grades 4 through 12 (and age 19 or younger)

Repertoire

Students can choose any sonata or sonatina from any time period and play:

1 movement
2 or more movements (from the same work, but movements need not be contrasting)

Time Limitations: 20-minute limit for complete works. 10-minute limit for two movements

Entrant results and feedback

All participants will receive a video response/critique of their performance from the festival judges. Select students will be invited to perform in an Honors Recital on the Northwest Missouri State University campus.

Memorization

It is highly recommended that performances be from memory – except for piano duets, two-piano works, or collaborative works such as sonatas for piano and violin, flute and piano (which are encouraged). (Important: Do not take repeats.)

Prizes

A $75 prize may be awarded for outstanding performances of a solo or collaborative works, which are highly encouraged, including works for piano duet; two pianos; piano with organ, harpsicord or another instrument(s).
