Screen Door Summer Music Festival

Friday, Aug 16, 2019 at 10:00am

Various Venues in Rockport
Rockport, ME 04856

Screen Door is a five-day musical extravaganza along one of the most scenic coastlines in the world. It features fresh performances by world-renowned musicians, presented in intimate venues, all in a distinctly relaxed summer-in-Maine atmosphere.

Screen Door welcomes you to vibrant variety. While you can get your Bach, Beethoven or Brahms fix at the festival, you will also experience novel, one-of-a-kind creative happenings — summer fun for audience and artists alike.

And Screen Door is a destination. Look out at Midcoast Maine’s craggy and rugged shoreline, a bay dotted with hundreds of uninhabited islands, and a crown of pined mountains. The musical venues are approachable, sometimes historic, and always New-England-beautiful. And this high-note of summer is famously laid back: Leave stodgy behind, wander around with a glass of wine and introduce yourself to the young artists who just opened their doors to you.

Organist Christopher Houlihan, an "intelligently virtuoso musician" (Gramophone) and acclaimed for his "glowing, miraculously life-affirming performance." (Los Angeles Times) returns to our Screen Door Festival to perform a program of homages, transcriptions and musical transformations. The Widor Allegro from Symphony No. 6 weaves and transforms two themes throughout; Howells’ Testament is a reimagining of Tallis’s music; the Ravel Vocalise Etude is an organ transcription by the startlingly talented Christopher Houlihan, and the Vierne Symphony uses two themes in very different ways throughout the movements. At the center of the program is Handel’s luminous Concert in F Major for which Christopher will be joined by Toomai String Quintet.

HERBERT HOWELLS Master Tallis’s Testament
HANDEL Concerto in F Major, Op. 4, No. 4

He has an unmistakable sound, electrifying this originally acoustic instrument, and plays a wide variety of genres on it - anything from traditional European folk to Middle-Eastern tunes, contemporary rock, hip-hop, and electronica. Having toured extensively, Guilhem is garnering international interest in the hurdy-gurdy while establishing himself as a modern virtuoso on this ancient instrument. He is internationally recognized and acclaimed as a musical and cultural innovator and nicknamed the "Hendrix of hurdy-gurdy". He is joined for this very special Screen Door concert by festival musicians who will perform new arrangements of Guilhem’s music by Brad Balliett.
