Rethinking Race: Black, White and Beyond
A virtual forum in which race and race-related issues can be discussed, examined, and hopefully, better understood through conversations, film, and speakers. Rethinking Race hopes to engage the public with important topics such as diversity in the workplace and awareness of issues and culture.

This event is part of an ongoing weekly series that aims to share the diverse home countries/cultures of our international students with the campus community. This week, we will visit The Philippines with our student presenter Ronald Villaber who will share information about his home country.

2:15pm - 3:15pm: Sustained Fear: Generational Mistrust in the Time of Covid:
When groups have relationships that are built on mistrust and fear, how will they go forward in extreme circumstances like a global pandemic? This panel conversation was designed a part of Heather Pollock’s Social Sciences Honors Colloquium, The Culture of Fear, in order to discuss the effects of Sustained Fear.
Billi Copeland-King, Director of the Summa Health Equity Center who is also an attorney that has filed civil rights cases along with Iriel Hopkins, Summa’s Director of Community Relations and Diversity, will discuss the layered approach to stopping covid-19 and providing effective messaging about the vaccine, in communities of color. Their work is affected by a long-standing and tragic history of mistrust of the medical profession, predicated on a relationship which includes experimentation, dishonesty, and abuse.

In 2020, states, counties, cities, and organizations across the country proclaimed “Racism Is a Public Health Crisis.” What does that mean? And what can we do about it? Learn more about WHY racism is a public health crisis, what is being done in the wake of these pronouncements, and what we must all do to be part of the solution.

African Dance Night: African Dance Night is a virtual dance class in collaboration with Cumbe the Center for African and Diaspora Dance.
