Photo Fundamentals: Capturing the Urban Landscape
With Photojournalist and Instructor John Kerans

Add depth to your urban photography by employing the “deep focus” technique, in which foreground, midground and background elements are arranged in harmony to create a three-dimensional effect.

Discover how to inject energy into your images by converting static, straight lines into dynamic diagonals. Learn why it’s crucial to determine “where best to stand” long before you press the shutter button. Find out why the story value of any urban landscape is enhanced by including people and signs of life.

John Kerans– a life-long journalist – is a graduate of the Army’s photojournalism school who later earned his BA in photojournalism at the University of Minnesota. During a decade as a Reservist, assigned to the Army Public Affairs office in Los Angeles, he learned how to take “on location portraits” without studio lights or fancy equipment, a no-frills approach he likes to share with others. In civilian life, John’s journalism career has included stints as a reporter in Chicago, an assignment editor in Minneapolis, a TV news director in Des Moines.

Since 2015, John has been an instructor for the Digital Photography Certificate Program offered by Continuing Education at STLCC, Saint Louis Community College. Prior to STLCC, he taught at Arizona State, Scottsdale College and the University of Kansas. John holds a community college teaching certificate from Arizona State, and earned an MA in advertising at Lindenwood University.

Since 2013, John has edited a web-based photography magazine for beginners – available online at – which has attracted 26,000 followers and accumulated 12-million page views.
