The Carthage Philharmonic is a versatile ensemble that performs standard orchestral repertoire and offers opportunities for smaller chamber ensembles working under faculty guidance, such as string ensembles and piano trios. Past repertoire has included orchestral works by well-known and respected composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Bizet, Copland, Holst, and Purcell.

The Philharmonic is a dynamic ensemble that prides itself on its commitment to growth, excellence, and camaraderie between ensemble members to create a more connected sound. The Philharmonic is conducted by Professor E. Edward Kawakami who, in 2017-18, was the recipient of the Carthage College Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. In addition to his role as conductor, Prof. Kawakami is an assistant professor of music and director of orchestral activities, as well as an active clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator. Before coming to Carthage, Prof. Kawakami served as conductor of the California State University, Northridge Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, as well as being employed as a conductor of various musicals, film soundtracks, and varied guest conducting positions around Southern California. Prof. Kawakami has collaborated with award winning musicians such as Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Twillich and Grammy award-winning violinist Mark O’Connor.

The concert is open to Carthage students, faculty, and staff only. Tickets are required and must be obtained in advance. External patrons are welcome to join us from home through our livestream.
