What can the documents and images found in an online archive say about the institution that compiled it? How can the background operations and internal content of an art institution – the materials that make up an archive – enrich the art community it serves?

Between 2003 and 2017, Art in General kept an online archive on Dropbox made up of scanned art works, professional records, order forms, contracts, discarded and workshopped logos, drafts of press releases and brochures, correspondences and proposals, and everything in between. Though the body of work is expansive, it is clearly not exhaustive; and while much of it can be identified, some cannot. What’s left reflects the rhythms and interests of the institution for over a decade. While perhaps not pressing, what remains here was essential and is preserved.

To inaugurate the 2020-2021 season, Art in General is pleased to present Dropped By and Found You: #DroppedByAiG, an ongoing publication of files from the gallery’s online archive. Every Thursday for 17 weeks, from September 10th until December 31st, posts from the Dropbox archive will be shared on our three social media platforms @art_in_general on Instagram, @ArtinGeneral on Twitter, and at Art in General on Facebook.

The online exhibition culminates with the launch of the institution’s 40th anniversary in 2021. As the gallery expands, Dropped By and Found You reintroduces our community to the values that have shaped us for decades and allows our community to reimagine what we are capable of in the future.

Online Exhibition: Ongoing; Every Thursday; September 10 – December 31, 2020
