Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration - Sing-Ins

Friday, Jan 11, 2019 at 5:00pm

Paddock Music Library, Hopkins Center
Hanover, NH 03755

The Sing-Ins are a chance to learn the music of social movements in America, to sing them with others who enjoy making music, and to discuss the questions that such music raises.

Join us every Friday evening during the month of January for the Sing-Ins in the Paddock Music Library. You do not need to be an experienced or "good" singer to participate. Our motto is, "If you can talk, you can sing!" The Sing-Ins are a chance to learn the music of social movements in America, to sing them with others who enjoy making music, and to discuss the questions that such music raises. For the past two years, these events have taught the songs of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This year, we take a look at labor movements in America, with parallels related to race, class, and gender. Themes for each week this year are:

Working on an American Dream, Songs about working-class America from the 60s, 70s, and 80s including:

Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi

Allentown by Billy Joel

Take This Job and Shove It by Johnny Paycheck

Working on a Dream by Bruce Springsteen

Factory by Bruce Springsteen

5 O'clock Somewhere by Alan Jackson
