Tai Chi has been practiced for centuries, dating back to Taoist monasteries. Also known as T’ai chi ch’uan or Taiijiquan, Tai Chi was developed as an ancient Chinese martial art. Tai Chi is a widely practiced form of exercise with numerous health benefits. Tai Chi is roughly the equivalent to a brisk walk. While there is not enough research to conclude clear benefits, studies have demonstrated Tai Chi to have potential positive effects for falls, hypertension, cognitive performance, osteoarthritis, depression, pain, balance confidence and COPD. Tai Chi is most commonly taught as a series of slow, gentle, low-impact movements that integrate the breath, the mind, and physical activity to achieve greater awareness and a sense of inner peace and well-being. Tai Chi is typically taught from a master to a student. It is based on the master’s approval rather than a formal educational format with certification.
