Want to learn how to edit and manipulate your digital photos to make them look better, and create new image combinations that go beyond the limitations of reality? Students will be introduced to the basic tools and functions of photo editing software using Pixlr, an online photo editor program (similar to Adobe Photoshop). Students will learn fundamental digital imaging concepts, such as image size and resolutions, layers, image adjustments, contrast, selection and combination. As students learn to navigate this software, they will create their own digital collages by combining images of their choice to create new surreal compositions.
Class 1-Review basic interface and introduce some useful tools. Review resolution and why it matters? Experiment with creating layered compositions–use someone or something and place in unexpected environment. Review selection tools, cutting and pasting different elements together.
Class 2- How is digital collage superior to tactile collage? Dive deeper into tools; discuss image adjustments, contrast and color manipulations, and blend modes. Review how different layers interact, transparency and drop shadows. Students develop new surreal combinations.
Class 3- Variations. Can you take the same elements and create something different? Learn to save versions for print and web; crop and resize images to fit the platforms students wish to share them on.
