Leader: Steve & Carolyn Balling, Save Mount Diablo Hike Volunteers
The devastating fires of August, 2020, weren’t without a silver lining of sorts. Once areas in our region burn during a wildfire, a spectacular event can take place in the days, months, and years following. Specialized plant species responding to environmental cues like charred soil, smoke, and increased sunlight often emerge from the soil in areas scorched by fire. These fire followers can offer both spectacular and subtle wildflower displays. We will explore some of the burned areas of Los Vaqueros Reservoir and see what the spring rains bring.
Be sure to bring plenty of water, a snack, and dress in layers. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Heavy rain cancels.
Due to COVID-19, we are limiting the hike to 8 participants. All participants must bring a mask and stay 6ft apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the hike.
Participants will also be required to accept our COVID-19 Protocol (available during registration).Land: Contra Costa Water District
