(Hong Kong/China/2006-directed by Jia Zhang-ke)

Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival, this breakthrough work from acclaimed director Jia Zhang-ke (Ash is Purest White, A Touch of Sin) is a visually stunning and deeply empathetic portrait of people left behind by a modernizing society - a unique hybrid of documentary and fiction. A decade-and-a-half ago, great changes came to the town of Fengjie during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric project in Central China; countless families that had lived there for generations had to relocate to other cities.

When the film was in production, Fengjie’s old town, with its 2000-year history, was torn down and submerged forever, but its new neighborhoods weren’t yet finished; there was still much that needed to be salvaged and decisions made about that which would be left behind. The characters of Still Life - a miner traveling to Fengjie in search of his ex-wife, and a nurse who has come to Fengjie to look for her vanished husband - will uncover the mysteries they’re looking for; yet in the process, they too will need to decide what is worth salvaging and what they need to let go of for their lives to continue. In Mandarin with English subtitles. (108 minutes)
