The exhibit examines the role of masking in human cultural systems. The use of masks emerges from the depths of antiquity beginning with the shaman ritualists of the Ice Age world of the upper Paleolithic and continues into contemporary cultures. Specimens in the exhibit are drawn from diverse culture areas of the world, both past and present.
