Geometry and art have always been intimately connected since ancient times, from Da Vinci's use of the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio, or Cezanne's famous quote “Treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere, and the cone”; to modern art's use of the Fibonacci spiral and other geometric principles in order to create aesthetics and visual harmony. This exhibition explores the use of geometry and mathematical concepts in contemporary art, through works in the MOCA collection, complemented by loans from local private collections.
