Exhibition - Quilt National 2019

Friday, Dec 6, 2019 at 10:00am

Foundry Art Centre
520 North Main Street
Saint Charles, MO 63301

This internationally-juried exhibition, juried by The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, joins the Foundry Art Centre once again for its renowned biennial collection of Art Quilts by contemporary fiber artists. This year’s collection includes  quilts from eight-four artists from twenty-six states and six countries. The Foundry Art Centre is the only venue that will host the exhibition in its entirety aside from its original run at The Dairy Barn Arts Center.

Quilt National was intended to demonstrate the transformations taking place in the world of quilting. Its purpose was then, and still is, to carry the definition of quilting far beyond its traditional parameters and to promote quiltmaking as what it always has been — an art form. The works in a Quilt National exhibit display a reverence for the lessons taught by the makers of the heritage quilts. Many of the works hold fast to the traditional methods of piecing and patching. At the same time, however, the Quilt National artist is intrigued by the challenge of expanding the boundaries of traditional quiltmaking by utilizing the newest materials and technologies. These innovative works generate strong emotional responses in the viewer while at the same time fulfilling the creative need of the artist to make a totally individual statement.

Françoise Barnes is an artist, quilter, teacher and lecturer. After coming to Athens in 1970s, she took drawing classes at Ohio University. Shortly after, she discovered quilts and saw the possibilities of designing her own and not replicating the traditional ones. She was one of the co-founders of Quilt National in 1979. After twenty years making quilts, she began to move away from textiles and go back to painting and drawing. Her quilts are in many private and corporate collections.

Carolyn Ducey is an artist and, since 1998, has been Curator of Collections at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. She earned a Ph.D. in Textiles, Clothing & Design, with an emphasis in Quilt Studies at the University of Nebraska in 2010.

Judy Kirpich is an Quilt National artist and teacher. She has studied with Nancy Crow and began displaying her own quilts in 2011. Her work has been shown in museums and quilt exhibitions in Europe, Asia, Australia, and in the United States. She is also founder of Grafik.
