This paper-centric exhibition will focus on how paper can be utilized in art. Last held at the Foundry in 2013, this juried exhibition is open to all artists who utilize paper as an integral component of expression. We want to ask artists how they push this ancient, tactile experience of using paper to create book arts, sculptures, and other forms of fine art. All two and three dimensional work will be considered.

This exhibition will be hosted as both a virtual and physical exhibition.

Virtual Exhibition Launches November 27

JUROR

Sukanya Mani

ABOUT THE JUROR

Sukanya Mani is an interdisciplinary artist with a passion in science, philosophy and exploring issues of gender and femininity. She takes complex ideas from those fields, builds stories around them and presents them in a visual art form. While her brain enjoys reading and gathering information about various subjects, her heart weaves them into visual stories which she then presents to the viewer. Her studio practice involves the art of cutting and sculpting paper. Creating these pieces is a meditative experience for her.

Mani unapologetically embraces craft, with a keen attention to the material's inherent properties and understands the importance of light and shadow within the work. The paper sculptures are exquisitely crafted through a process of meticulous hand made cuts. She removes carefully calculated space to place subtle shifting forms side by side, until the sculpture appears, transforming the space it occupies. By mixing science and art, observation and imagination, she hopes to find a bridge between the two, mimicking the breathtaking complexity that exists at every level of our lives, and filtering it through the intuitiveness of the artistic imagination.

Mani has worked as a teaching artist and arts administrator with various arts organizations including the St. Louis Art Museum, COCA, Contemporary Museum and MO History museum. Mani also creates large scale sculptures as part of her interactive public art. Her artwork is part of numerous collections like the City of Poplar Bluff, City of Ballwin, Brentwood Parks and Manchester, MO.  Mani’s is the recipient of multiple grants from the Regional Arts Commission. Born in India, Mani lives and works in St. Louis.

Exhibition Date: November 20, 2020 - January 7, 2021
