Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in Asian American culture. In the United States, Asian Pacific Americans pass along their traditions to their children. Families celebrate in their homes or gather with others in their communities. Today, many Asian Pacific American communities hold large festivals with traditional song and dance performances, parades and other festivities.
New Years All Year Round: Theater, Dance & Sound is the second of three iterations of KidPLACE exhibits that highlight various cultural traditions as celebrated during the Lunar New Year season in Asia and the United States.
Themes of family, celebration and spectacle are illustrated throughout the gallery with several interactive installations; craft a shadow puppet to conduct a play in the shadowbox theater, make a wish at the hoa mai tree, and design your own New Year’s outfit. A life-size mural depicts a lion dance happening right in front of the viewer! Visitors can also expect to hear the sounds of lion dance drumming and firecrackers periodically travel through the gallery. Artifacts from the Wing Luke collection are on display as well, including a visually stunning royal court robe as worn by actors in Chinese opera.
