Abend Gallery presents a four-person show featuring the work of Mark Bailey, Jacob Dhein, Kim English and Nicolas Martin, each of the artists contributing magnificent work in their own individual styles.

Artist Mark Bailey’s painterly brushstrokes subtly define figures and objects within his works. His impressionist style captures an intimate portrait of his figures and the surrounding environment. Bailey’s cityscapes and interiors seem to glow with the energy of the city and its busy urban backdrops. His exquisite figures reveal an unspoken undertone of an individual story within each scene he translates onto canvas.

A favorite among collectors, Bailey was chosen in 2010 by Southwest Art magazine as one of “21 Under 31 Artists to Collect Now” and has since been a featured artist within the publication, as well as American Art Collector, The Artist’s Magazine, and others. Bailey has also received acclaim in art competitions, earning Best in Show at the Governor’s Art Exhibit in Colorado and taking third place in The Artist’s Magazine’s portrait and figurative category.

Mark Bailey earned his Bachelor of Rine Art degree from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is a member of the American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America.

Jacob Dhein employs a variety of contemporary and traditional techniques to create a visual experience to entice the observer. The artist shares, “One of my goals is to have the paintings possess an abstract quality when viewed at a proximity of 3-5 feet, but as the observer steps back the painting becomes more representational.”

Approaching his work this way makes the process of paint application an important part of the whole. Dhein achieves this by using a variety of tools including a brush, palette knife, brayer, and squeegee. There is a visual map in many of his works that allows the viewer to see his process.

Dhein’s paintings consist of two distinct subject matters—figurative/portrait and cityscape—both painted in a similar style, using the same applications although to various degrees. “It is my goal to explore the beauty that lies within the division between representation and abstraction. It will be my take on a modern impressionism using the figure and cityscape as the building blocks of this contemporary genre.”

Kim English, a Colorado-based painter, depicts in his paintings the simple beauty found in daily life. Known for his mastery of chiaroscuro, each piece speaks to the true focus of English’s inspiration the harmony existing between light and shadow.

This artist’s subject matter, ranging from a street side fruit stand in Mexico to sun filled windows, creates a particular mood through which the viewer is introduced to charming scenarios that are wrapped in depth and texture, and are entirely about paint. This is the primary force of English’s painting his astonishing manipulation of his medium. He maintains a feeling of spontaneity by completing each painting in one sitting. He shares, “I paint alla prima method; immediacy is important, not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint.”

English was born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs. After graduation from the Rocky Mountain School of Art he joined the faculty and later began teaching at the Art Students League of Denver and the ScottsdaleArtists School. He has exhibited at the Allied Artists of America winning the Gold Medal of Honor; the National Academy of Design; the Artists of America-Denver Rotary Club; NAWA 21st Annual Exhibition; Arts for the Parks; the Colorado Governor’s Invitational –Loveland Museum; the A.R. Mitchell Memorial Museum of Western Art; The Knickerbocker 42nd Annual Exhibition; the Oil Painters of America and won both the Certificate of Merit and the Joseph Hartley Memorial Award at two Salmagundi Club Exhibitions.

Nicolas Martin has an uncanny ability to illustrate scenes from daily life with a sense of understanding and a perspective unlike any other. The street views, stairwells, and interior views that he depicts come alive in such a way as to give these recognizable environments magical, arresting qualities which are otherwise unseen.

His application of paint breathes life into the seemingly mundane through his use of light, color, and texture. Martin’s paintings have an aura about them which translates to the viewer. His paintings articulate his deep appreciation and understanding of our environments and the ways in which we interact and relate to them.

Nicolas Martin is a French figurative painter born in 1980. After completing the influential Auguste Renoir School in Paris, Nicolas decided to deepen his artistic knowledge by completing the graphic design program at the University Laval in Quebec, Canada.

In 2003, he won the 1st Prize of "La Fondation de la Vocation" in Paris. Throughout his career, Nicolas worked as lead designer for the famous Galeries Lafayette, and art director for various companies and newspapers. Today, he defines himself as an emergent figurative painter.
