'Cuba in Transition: Narrative & Perspective' is a traveling exhibition of photomosaic murals, interviews, and field recordings by artist Mark Guglielmo. Each mural measures 5 to 15 feet long and is handmade by taping together hundreds, sometimes thousands, of individual 4x6” photographs. Neither a computer nor Photoshop are used. Culled from dozens of audio interviews Guglielmo recorded and conducted in Spanish, diverse Cuban voices and perspectives are presented. Set to a soundtrack of soulful Cuban music. It is the New York-born artist’s fifth exhibition of pieces from this series, which opened in June 2017 at APE Gallery in Northampton, MA, before traveling to Boston, Colorado, and Easthampton's Williston.
Guglielmo visited Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa in July 2015 and Havana and Viñales in February 2016 before President Obama’s landmark trip to Cuba in March 2016, the first by a sitting US President in 88 years. In February 2017, Guglielmo returned to the island, this time to Cienfuegos and Trinidad de Cuba, just two months after the death of Fidel Castro. An homage to Cuba at this historic moment, this project chronicles a dynamic and rich culture full of heart and soul.
