The contemporary mechanical works in Tiny Intricacies may be small in size but they are designed to delight and surprise. Some of the works are traditional in their construction using materials such as wood, metal, and paint; others reflect more technological advancements, predominantly engineered utilizing electronic components.
These intricately-crafted treasures are installed alongside several 19th-century novelty pieces from the Guinness Collection that are known as “precious smalls.” Innovative in design and whimsical in nature, they embody the spirited sense of imagination and curiosity of artists from the past and the present. Ordinary, everyday objects are re-imagined as works of art through mechanical ingenuity—from the profoundness of Blink (2019), to the fanciful Hat Ride (2018), and household objects like the Musical Serving Dish (c1900) and Musical Trivet (c1900) from the Guinness Collection.
