Craft Alliance, Staenberg Gallery, presents Every Thing and More, a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Pattie Chalmers. Chalmers at heart is a story teller. Her work quietly whispers to us about her memories of her childhood and dreams. Creating a world of everyday objects created using terra cotta, allows us to reminiscence with her and perhaps recollect our subconscious connections.
It is Chalmers’ enthusiasm for exploring the nature of objectness and the aura of association that were the catalysts for creating Every Day I Think of You—a collection of 365 articles that each connect through recollection to a specific person. The objects that make up this piece are specific to her remembrances but often become stimulants for a viewer’s memories. Chalmers says, “The connection to others through a thing’s capacity to contain a memory and our human ability to condense such a variety of experiences into seemingly mundane mementos are what continue to grab my imagination.”
Pattie Chalmers will share an installation of her piece, Every Day I Think of You, as well as, other pieces she will complete over her fall residency as a McKnight Artist at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis.
Pattie Chalmers grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, this wintery prairie city proved a fertile ground for her imagination. She received a BFA in printmaking from the University of Manitoba and her MFA in ceramics at the University of Minnesota. Chalmers works steadily and exhibits widely having presented work on 4 continents, in 6 countries and in 27 US states. Since 2006 Chalmers has lived and worked in Carbondale, where she is an Associate Professor of Art at Southern Illinois University School of Art and Design. (Chalmers might be a little bit compulsive and she definitely likes to laugh at her own jokes).
