About the Event
When you talk about the best small-town traditions in America, Elko’s Festival of Trees should be at the top of every list. Each year, this holiday event raises tens of thousands of dollars for local charities and nonprofits by auctioning and selling wreaths, decorated trees and other holiday-themed decor.
Usually held the week after Thanksgiving, this tradition of more than 30 years brings the community together to support Elko-area nonprofits and generally get into the spirit of the Christmas season. Presented by the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority, the Festival of Trees in Elko is a multi-day event during which bidders can check out trees and other items up for auction at the Elko Conference Center. The week culminates in a “glittery gala” that features trees creatively decorated by local businesses and service groups. A silent auction caps off the evening, with lucky winners getting to take home their prized decor.
Annual Festival of Trees
Past themes at the annual Festival of Trees have included “Christmas at the North Pole”, “A Classic Christmas,” “My Favorite Things,” “Explore Elko” and “Rustic Yuletide.” Tree themes generally match up with the event’s theme, but it’s a blast to check out some of the more unusual entries, such as one recent one that was built around a cat condo and festooned with kitty treats and toys. The more creative, the better.
Recent events have raised more than $40,000 for local charities, including Elko Swim Team, Nevada Health Centers, Ruby Mountain Little League and Special Olympics of Nevada, which split the proceeds evenly. Nearly 500 bidders vie for the chance to take home a special tree just in time for the holiday season. More than 100 items are up for grabs each year.
