Love It Was Not
When Auschwitz inmate Helena Citron was asked to sing, in December, 1942, at the birthday party of one of the SS men in charge of her work crew, she could not have known it would be the moment that her life was saved. The soldier, Franz Wunsch, not much older than she, instantly fell in love with her - “to the point of madness,” said another inmate nearly 70 years later, who witnessed the relationship over the next two years. Love It Was Not is the story of that relationship, from Helena and Franz’s own mouths and those of other survivors who were there, culminating in the couple's reunion, 30 years later, when Helena is asked to testify at Franz’s war crimes trial. A fascinating and provocative tale, exceptionally well-documented, beautifully rendered, and not to be missed.
