His battles with fate are vividly realized in dreamlike, lyrical passages punctuated with cosmic joy and dramatic spectacle. Hailed by BBC Radio 3 as a “poet of the piano,” Andrew Tyson plays Beethoven’s groundbreaking and boldly melodic First Piano Concerto, equally poignant and boisterous. But first, the Orchestra plays Pulitzer Prize-winning African-American composer George Walker’s serene Lyric for Strings.
