This is the first of four successive classes making up Baylor Scott & White Health’s premiere Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program for our Central Texas area, through which people with prediabetes or diabetes gain all the knowledge, skills, and practice needed to modify their behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions over their lifetime.
The benefits of taking our classes:
-Set up in 1981 and accredited since 1986, it is now among the longest running, certified diabetes education programs in the country by the American Diabetes Association (the gold standard for diabetes education programs).
-It is taught only by Certified Diabetes Educators (the gold standard for diabetes educators).
-It uses the latest edition of a recognized, industry-standard, certified diabetes curriculum called BASICS from the International Diabetes Center for up-to-date, evidence-based content which patients take home as a lifelong reference.
-It is taught in 4 successive sessions or classes of up to 10 hours over 3-6 months to maximize behavior learning.
-It teaches every patient with diabetes AND their families, who are encouraged to accompany them, everything they need to know to successfully self-manage their disease.
-It annually shows short-term patient health and behavior improvements: lower HgbA1C, improved knowledge and confidence in managing your disease effectively, meal plan adherence, exercise plan, and more.
-It also has demonstrated long-term benefits for attendees in the form of reduced clinic visits and hospitalizations for those who come through our classes versus those who do not.
-It hosts a free, monthly diabetes support group where patients can interact with one another and hear a variety of professional experts on the latest diabetes-related topics, trends, and treatments.
