Dimitri Shostakovich subverted all expectations when he unveiled his Symphony No. 9. Rather than a triumphant victory symphony, Shostakovich delivered what he later called “a joyful little piece.” The ninth symphony displays Shostakovich’s sardonic wit, ironic humor, as well as his gift for expressing profound sorrow through lyricism. 2020 and 2021 Stulberg Gold Medalists Dongyoung Jake Shim and Keila Wakao return to Kalamazoo for Johann Sebastian Bach’s scintillating Concerto for Two Violins. Jonathan Bailey Holland, a native of Flint, Mich., rounds out the program with a lively homage to the city of Detroit with Motor City ReMix.
