Jaap van Zweden conducts Brahms’s genial Second Symphony (sometimes dubbed his “Pastoral”); splendid horn calls open the work, and cascades of melodies and dance-like passages enchant the ear. Renaud Capuçon solos in Berg’s Violin Concerto, dedicated “To the memory of an angel,” whose musical portrait appears in the first movement. The heart-rending Adagio incorporates Bach’s chorale “It is enough.”
