Chuck Melchin is a familiar face in the vibrant roots scene around Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts, having spent the last 20 years there writing, recording and performing music with his “loose collective” of musicians he calls the Bean Pickers Union.
He has released four critically acclaimed full-length records and two EPs of alt.country / Americana / hippiegrass goodness under that band name. Americana UK called 2008’s Potlatch a “masterclass in Americana music”. Twangville said of 2012’s Better the Devil, “if music is at its finest when it paints a picture, this album is the aural equivalent of a Hopper painting”, while American Roots said that Chuck writes “beautifully poetic songs of despair, hope and redemption”. Now residing on the seacoast of New Hampshire, Chuck continues to make music both with the band and solo, releasing Dry Goods and Sundries as a solo record and Alchemy as a duo with good friend and frequent collaborator Michael Spaly.
