Expansion of Oncology services to include support group
OSF St. Francis Hospital is pleased to extend oncology services to include a cancer support group. Receiving a cancer diagnosis creates many emotions. Many people feel shock, anger or disbelief and some feel intense fear and sadness. Some peple feel all of these things. Even the most supportive family members may not understand how it feels to have cancer and this can cause some people to feel alone or isolated.
Cancer support groups give a safe space for people to talk about their own experiences living with cancer or living in remission. Often people are only comfortable sharing these experiences with others who understand what they are going through. This can help reduce stress and give people a sense of being understood and not alone.
Support group members may also share information about what to expect during treatment, helpful tips to manage side effects of treatment. They may also share which ways they found helpful to communicate with their family members and health care teams. This sharing can give members a feeling of more control over their situation.
