Schedule of Events
7:30 pm-8:30 pm: How to Encourage a Science Nerd - STEM Education and Youth Experiences in Science
Join Khari Milner, (Co-Director of Agenda for Children Out-of-School Time & EL STEAM Network Manager, Cambridge, MA) and Kortney Adams (Education Manager at Central Square Theater) to discuss increasing equity, access, and innovation for youth and families.
6:00 pm-6:30 pm: A day in the life of a cyrogenic engineer at MIT
If you are a cryogenic engineer you are interested in how materials behave at ultra-cold temperatures. Join cryogenic engineer Dhananjay Ravikumar for a virtually interactive look into what actually makes his job at MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center so "cool." In the process, watch the effects of liquid nitrogen on substances you might encounter in your day-to-day lives (like the veggies in your salad). You can also get a peek into the curious world of "superfluids," which spontaneously flow out of containers, act as if they have no friction and can even flow through the container that's holding it!
4:00 pm-4:45 pm: Mass General Hospital Past and Present
Explore Mass General history and how it connects to the present day.
Presented by the staff of the Russell Museum at Mass General, the event includes a virtual tour of the Ether Dome where surgical anesthesia debuted in 1846. We'll also talk about how the hospital responded to crises such as the 1918 flu pandemic and how the hospital has adapted to the coronavirus pandemic.
The presentation will include a slide show of current and historical images, polls, and discussion.
This program is geared for eighth-graders through adults.
3:30 pm-4:00 pm: Meet the Scientists - Bristol Myers Squibb
Have you ever talked to a real scientist? Do you have questions about what being a scientist means? You're in the right place!
We have two of our very own Bristol Myers Squibb scientists joining us here, to tell you more about their jobs and to answer any questions that you might have!
12:15 pm-1:00 pm: The Physics of Flight with Kites
The physics of flight. Let's do more than talk, let's see it happen! This colorful presentation explains how kites fly. Many demonstrations are included with sound and video to show how the properties of lift and drag overcome the law of gravity. Ages 12+ and adults.
10:00 am-11:00 am: Career Exploration with Northeastern University
It's MassBioEd Career Exploration Week! Meet scientists, learn about their careers, get a virtual tour of amazing STEM companies!
MassBioEd is hosting a series of one-hour virtual career events from April 12th – 16th. Each session will showcase a different life science company or academic institution and will give participants the opportunity to learn about careers integral to that host institution. Each session will include a career panel or presentation and an interactive lab tour or demonstration. You may attend any or all of the events. Indicate your choices on the registration page.
These events are best for high school students, early college students, educators, and parents.
