A brand-new Broadway cabaret is a unique recognition of Black History Month featuring some of Broadway’s top Black artists performing their signature works, as well as roles that Black artists have not traditionally played.
Created exclusively for the Center by New York casting director/producer Stephen DeAngelis, four Broadway artists of color will celebrate their identity through their art by recreating their most memorable musical performances and honoring the icons that came before them.
The evening will showcase musical selections from Hamilton; Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations; The Lion King; Ragtime; The Wiz; The Color Purple; Chicago; The Book of Mormon; Aida; Ain’t Misbehavin’; Smokey Joe’s Café; Five Guys Named Moe; and more.
The cast will display their versatility and share personal stories that enrich their narrative and provide new and exciting perspectives. Scheduled performers are Doug Eskew (Five Guys Names Moe; The Color Purple; Ain’t Misbehavin’; Truly Blessed), Lana Gordon (Chicago; Jesus Christ Superstar; The Lion King), Jelani Remy (Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations; Smokey Joe’s Café; The Lion King); and Syndee Winters (Hamilton; The Lion King; Pippin; Motown the Musical). The evening will also include a special appearance by Arizona’s own Alexandra Ncube (The Book of Mormon). Musical director and accompanist will be Brian P. Whitted (Chicago; The Color Purple; Violet; Shuffle Along; or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed).
