The Neurovascular Center at Rhode Island Hospital has teamed up with the Joe Niekro Foundation to form a support group for patients and family members affected by a brain aneurysm, AVM or hemorrhagic stroke. The group will meet monthly to come together to share stories, offer helpful resources and assist with ongoing support for survivors and their families.
The Joe Niekro Foundation (JNF) was established in 2007 and is the “brain child” of Natalie Niekro (daughter of Joe). Joe Niekro was a 22-year veteran of professional baseball who suddenly lost his life because of a brain aneurysm in October 2006. The astonishing lack of public awareness and under-support of research led to the launch of a crusade to educate and encourage awareness about brain aneurysms and other cerebral disorders.
Group discussions will be led by Marcia Liss, PhD, clinical psychologist and Marie Kelley, RN, clinical nurse manager, Interventional Radiology.
