Nominated for ten César Awards including Best Film, this buoyant comedy follows a depressed, unemployed man (Mathieu Amalric) who spends his days popping pills and playing Candy Crush until he finds a flyer for a newly minted all-male swimming team at the local pool. He soon discovers his new teammates are a gaggle of misfits led by a disgraced champion, Delphine (Virginie Efira). Braving the skepticism and ridicule of those around them, they set out on an unlikely adventure, discovering a lot about themselves along the way.

5:30 pm–7:15 pm: A Man in a Hurry

Directed by Hervé Mimran (France, 2018, 100 min.). Digital. French with English subtitles.

In this bright comedy based on a memoir by the former head of Peugeot, Alain (Fabrice Luchini, of Courted and Cycling with Molière) is a high-profile businessman who has neglected his personal life in favor of corporate success. When he suffers a major stroke and wakes up in a hospital room, Alain must rebuild his life and his relationships with the help of a speech therapist, Jeanne (Leïla Bekhti). This may sound like the makings of a serious drama, but director Hervé Mimran tackles the subject with a feather-light touch, deftly weaving in moments of hilarity and razor-sharp wit.

Location: Harry and Mildred Remis Auditorium (Auditorium 161)

8:00 pm–9:55 pm: Non-Fiction

Directed by Olivier Assayas (France, 2018, 108 min.). Digital. French with English subtitles.

Juliette Binoche and Guillaume Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper; Clouds of Sils Maria) for this wry, slyly seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amid the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer (Vincent Macaigne) begins blurring the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs—including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)—as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.
