Johann Sebastian Bach
Trio Sonata from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079
With Bach in Three, Labadie has programmed works written by Bach for three instruments or voices. OSL is pleased to welcome guest organist Jeremy Filsell, Music Director of Saint Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue to open this program with the Sonata in E-flat Major, BWV 525, performing on Saint Thomas’s Loening-Hancock Organ, an instrument modeled after a European style of organ building from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This is followed by Bernard Labadie’s own arrangement of the E-flat Major sonata for string trio and harpsichord, a work that he has described as containing “deceptively simple music that doesn’t rely on power but rather on balance, clarity and purity.” The Violin and Keyboard Sonata in A Major features St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble members Jesse Mills and Bob Wolinsky, and rounding out the program is the beloved Trio Sonata from Bach’s legendary The Musical Offering.
