The 40th anniversary of the Artists of the Plains Art Show & Sale coincides with the Center for Western Studies’ 50th anniversary year. To mark these two very special occasions, we are inviting old friends back home.

In the early days, the Artists of the Plains event was held at the Center itself, housed at the time in the lower level of Mikkelsen Library. Artists would set up their artwork in offices, hallways, and any other space that could be found. Through the years the show has changed a lot, but one thing has remained the same ― the passion our artist family shows for providing the community with excellence in fine arts! To celebrate this historic occasion, we are bringing a piece of Artists of the Plains back to the Center for Western Studies for a very special gallery exhibition that will run November 2, 2020, through February 5, 2021.

We invite all artists who have participated in the Artists of the Plains Art Show & Sale over the years to submit up to five pieces for consideration for this marvelous exhibition event forty years in the making.

Eligibility: Artists must have participated in at least one Artists of the Plains Art Show & Sale between 1980 and 2019. Artists are welcome to submit works in all visual art mediums (painting, sculpture, mixed media, etc.) and may submit up to five pieces for consideration. If you have questions about whether your work is an accepted medium, please contact Kristi Thomas (kristi.thomas@augie.edu).

Fees & Sales: Accepted works will be displayed as submitted. Artists have the additional option of selling their work. Please include price when submitting art for sale. All exhibit sales will be handled through the CWS Gift Shop, and a 30% commission will be collected by CWS for all works sold as a result of the exhibition. All scheduling, freight costs, and delivery/pick-up charges will be the responsibility of the artist.

The exhibition will be located in the Madsen/Nelson Galleries of the Center's Fantle Building at 2121 South Summit Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD. We ask that visitors observe all posted public health and safety policies.

The exhibition will be free and open to the public.

Contact: Please contact CWS Education Assistant Kristi Thomas for questions or clarification: kristi.thomas@augie.edu or 605.274.4005.
