With Simon Kelly, curator and head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art

This talk explores the rise of the modern art market in 19th-century France and the role artists played in this transforming marketplace. It focuses on the Barbizon and pre-Impressionist landscape painter Théodore Rousseau and his pioneering strategies to promote his art

The program accompanies the recent publication of Simon Kelly’s book Théodore Rousseau and the Rise of the Modern Art Market: An Avant-Garde Landscape Painter in 19th-Century France.

This virtual program will take place via Zoom and will include opportunities for participants to ask questions with the Q&A feature. Attendees’ mics and cameras will not be activated. This event will have automated closed captions through Zoom.

Attendees must register to receive the Zoom link. Capacity for the live program is limited.

A closed-captioned recording of the program will be available on the Museum’s YouTube channel in the weeks following.
