ARTeriors is composed of three ingredients: artists, their ideas, and empty commercial spaces in the city. The result is a creative alchemy that has invigorated and coalesced the city’s arts community.
Along with ACAF’s other signature events—48 Blocks Atlantic City and Chalk About AC—ARTeriors is making headlines, making waves, and making a powerful statement about possibility in the seaside resort, where public art by local artists has been notably absent.
“We have so many gifted artists in our midst, but until now they had few opportunities to create and display their work,” says ACAF Program Manager Zach Katzen. “ARTeriors takes vacant spaces— former bakeries, empty retail stores, unused offices—and turns the artists loose to build temporary public exhibits.”
“Everything is impermanent—the exhibits are open six to eight weeks—but they’ve had a lasting impact. They’ve created an arts movement in a city that had none.”
The artists include painters, sculptors, photographers and potters. They’re young and old, established and emerging. Their work is uplifting, empowering, and sometimes a little outrageous. They reflect the many faces and diverse cultures of Atlantic City.
“ARTeriors is about transition and transformation,” says Katzen. “It’s discovered homegrown, unknown artists and brought their work to an appreciative audience. Just as meaningfully, it’s helped many people discover the artist in themselves.”
