Vision Walkable Newark brings residents, community leaders, & partners together to walk through Newark’s streets & assess real conditions that affect daily mobility.
Vision Walkable Newark is a hands-on community walk audit designed to identify what’s working—and what needs repair—across Newark’s neighborhoods. Led by AARP New Jersey in partnership with America Walks and local organizations, this initiative focuses on improving everyday walkability rather than trail systems, highlighting real challenges residents face as they move through their communities.
During the three-hour experience, participants will explore designated routes, observe street and sidewalk conditions, assess lighting and signage, and discuss how infrastructure impacts safety and accessibility. The walk will conclude with a group reflection to prioritize findings and recommend next steps for city improvement.
By engaging residents directly in the observation and planning process, Vision Walkable Newark aims to strengthen community voice, support safer street design, and advance Newark’s vision for connected, age-friendly neighborhoods.
